Our Mission
Why Material Minds exists, and what we're working to build.
Mission Statement
To make materials science visible, hands-on, and welcoming for every student who's curious about how things are made.
Materials science sits quietly behind almost every major innovation — from lightweight alloys in aerospace to the semiconductors in every phone and the biomaterials reshaping medicine. Most students never encounter the field until college, if at all. Material Minds was founded to change that: to give students an early, hands-on introduction to the field, and a community that makes STEM feel approachable rather than intimidating.
We believe the best way to understand materials science is to touch it — to grow a crystal, snap a sample, watch a polymer change state. So we build our meetings, labs, and events around direct experience, backed by mentorship from people already working in the field.
Our Vision
A future where every student has the chance to discover materials science before they have to choose a major — and where our club becomes a launchpad for the next generation of engineers, researchers, and scientists.
Core Values
What guides everything we do
Curiosity First
We start with questions, not answers. Every meeting is built to spark "wait, why does that happen?"
Inclusion
No prior experience needed. We meet members where they are and build confidence alongside knowledge.
Hands-On Learning
We prioritize labs, demos, and projects over lectures whenever we can.
Real-World Impact
We connect what we learn to sustainability, industry, and problems worth solving.
Collaboration
Science is a team sport. We build projects and solve problems together.
Growth
We're a founding chapter — we expect to learn, adapt, and grow right alongside our members.
Our Goals This Year
- Launch weekly meetings covering core materials science topics for beginners.
- Host at least one guest speaker event per semester.
- Run hands-on lab demonstrations at every general meeting.
- Build partnerships with local universities, labs, and industry sponsors.
- Establish a founding leadership team and club charter.
